Dear East High School Students and Parents,
The Wichita Police Department and East High School would like to bring
to your attention our concerns about your child crossing the street
before, during, and after school.
We feel that a better understanding of the laws that apply to the
crosswalks will assist you in making safe and responsible decisions
in keeping your children safe. We appreciate your understanding and
assistance in working with us to prevent any future accidents or
injuries.
Section 11.44.030-Crossing roadway at location other than crosswalk
For any person crossing a roadway where traffic signals are in
operation, pedestrians shall not cross a roadway except in a marked
crosswalk. Pedestrians shall follow special Walk or
Don't Walk signals that are in place at the crosswalk.
Section 11.44.020-Crossing streets at corners
No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of
safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle as to constitute
an immediate hazard.
Section 11.44.045-Walking on sidewalks required
Where a sidewalk is provided and its use is practicable, it
shall be unlawful for any pedestrian to walk along and upon an
adjacent roadway.
Section 11.44.040-Walking in the right half of the crosswalk
Pedestrians shall move, whenever possible, to the right side of
the crosswalk.
This is a joint partnership between the Wichita Police Department,
East High School, and You. The Wichita Police Department
greatly appreciates your help in keeping your streets safe. If you
have questions regarding these or any traffic ordinances, please
visit us at www.wichita.gov.
Citations will be issued for violations of these ordinances.
