OVERVIEW

TWO OPTIONS:  for completing the requirement for obtaining a Kansas driver license are available to East students.  students must be 15 years old on the first day of class.  A fee is charged for taking this course.  An overview of courses offered is shown below.

DRIVER EDUCATION 1:  Students learn to drive responsibly.  Students prepare for street and highway driving by studying the course materials and practice driving in a simulator and on the street.  A  medical referral is required from students who suffer from epilepsy,  fainting, dizzy spells or other conditions which might make safe driving difficult.  Students must be fifteen by the first day of this course.

SPECIAL EDUCATION DRIVER EDUCATION:  This course has the same requirements as "Driver Education-Regular School Year."  Access to this course requires a student to have an I.E.P. specifying placement within the program.  The course is offered at East High School only.  Students identified for participation in the course may seek district supplied transportation from their base school to East High School.

SUMMER SCHOOL DRIVER EDUCATION:  This course lasts 6 weeks.  Students attend classes 5 days a week.  Three sessions are offered; 7:15-8:55 am; 9:05-10:45 am; 11:15-12:55 pm.  Enrollment takes place Saturday, May 7, 2005 from 9:00-11 am.  The course runs from June 6 until July 15.  Every 3rd day students will spend an additional 2 hours at school, one hour driving and one hour at the simulators.  Each student will also be required to drive one time in the evening.  No vacations should be scheduled during this course.
